I love this compass July 28, 2010 Dustin Tarditi (Raleigh, NC) Having been trained with a lensatic for many years, I wasn't sure about an adventure racing baseplate compass - WOW I was missing so much! This is a great design, very rugged, and easy to use.
I plan on getting more as backups and for other kit bags. My only complaint was the OEM lanyard - I replaced this with a piece of 550 cord. Great product!
Brunton Eclipse Compass July 1, 2010 Denise This is an easy to use, dependable, and has all the features needed for our Search and Rescue K9 team.
So much unrealized potential June 1, 2010 M. Jones (Fresno, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The compass needle action on this unit is amazing. There is very little swing and the circle in circle is idiotproof, which is a good thing at 4AM after being on course for 17 hours. The magnifying lens over the bearing number is a nice touch.
Unfortunately this unit is very susceptible to getting jammed up with dirt. Dirt? Outdoors? Who'da thought. I wish the manual had mentioned how easy it is to pop the center out of this compass for cleaning, definitely doable in the field. I had to get that good advice here: [...].
Finally, and this is a fatal flaw, the markings (UTM tools and circle in circle) rub off the back in short order. I'm buying a separate UTM tool and using this compass as my backup.
Not too bad February 26, 2010 AR Fool (Tampa, FL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I will admit that if this compass did not have the UTM tool built in, I would still be using my old Silva. The downsides are that the compass sticks a bit while rotating, making taking my initial bearing from a map difficult and I generally prefer a compass that has a longer direction of travel line. Still, easy to use and the built in "set it and forget it" declination feature is very nice.
Compass November 2, 2009 Hatepavement (MO, USA) The compass works great, used it for an adventure race in december, and anorienteering event last wee. Took a little to get used to the circle in circle, but I like if just fine now.
